Natural, in ovo, vertical transmission of the RNA viruses, Chequa iflavirus and Athtab bunyavirus, but not Cherax reovirus in redclaw crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus)

چکیده

Abstract The first molecular evidence for natural, in ovo, vertical transmission of Chequa iflavirus and Athtab bunyavirus from farmed female redclaw crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus) cultured northern Queensland, Australia is presented. Cherax reovirus was also examined, but that this spread via ovo vertically very limited. Amongst 57 broodstock-derived pools fertilized eggs, 38 (66.7%), 34 (59.6%) 6 (10.5%) were positive iflavirus, respectively with the respective average loads 6.56 × 104, 2.33 × 103 1.03 × 101 copies/μl tested samples. Grouping samples by farm origins, all viruses most farms statistically similar (P > 0.05) viral loads. As two are transovarial transmitted, surface sterilizing practices would be ineffective load remains high as seen bunyavirus, extremely low on surface-treated eggs appears reovirus. Our evidence, plus literature, supports general rule if virus gut, faecal /oral can drastically reduced efficient egg sterilization. If then RT-qPCR testing coupled therapeutic methods selection resistant families or detection negative, geographically isolated populations way forward removal bunyavirus.

Distribution and establishment of the alien Australian redclaw crayfish, Cherax quadricarinatus, in South Africa and Swaziland

BACKGROUND The Australian redclaw crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus, von Martens), is native to Australasia, but has been widely translocated around the world due to aquaculture and aquarium trade. Mostly as a result of escape from aquaculture facilities, this species has established extralimital populations in Australia and alien populations in Europe, Asia, Central America and Africa. In South...

Natural infection of the redclaw crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus with presumptive spawner-isolated mortality virus.

Crayfish farmers reported reduced tolerance of stress in specimens of Cherax quadricarinatus, which were formerly robust crayfish. Furthermore, one farmer reported a large reduction in yield with final harvest only equaling the stocking weight. Upon trapping, one-third of the crayfish regularly died overnight and a further one-third died on the sorting tray during sexing of juveniles (approxima...

Direct Age Determination of a Subtropical Freshwater Crayfish (Redclaw, Cherax quadricarinatus) Using Ossicular Growth Marks

Recent studies have reported that crustacean age determination is possible. We applied a direct ageing method (i.e. transverse cross sectioning of gastric ossicles) to a subtropical freshwater crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus) sourced from an aquaculture population. Growth mark periodicity and the potential for chronological depositions were investigated by staining C. quadricarinatus with calc...

Stimulation of molt by RNA interference of the molt-inhibiting hormone in the crayfish Cherax quadricarinatus.

In crustaceans, molting is known to be under the control of neuropeptide hormones synthesized and secreted from the eyestalk ganglia. While the role of molt-inhibiting hormone (MIH) in regulating molting has been described in several species using classical methods, an in vivo specific MIH targeted manipulation has not been described yet. In the present study, an MIH cDNA was isolated and seque...
